How to Become a Dental Assistant in Idaho
By Elizabeth Carr, DHA · 5 min read
Idaho does not register or license dental assistants, and it requires no radiography certification. The board's rules say dental assistants may perform dental services for which they are trained unless the rules prohibit them, working under direct supervision for intraoral procedures. Common duties for assistants include chairside assisting and taking radiographs. Verify current rules with the Idaho State Board of Dentistry before enrolling in any course.
Idaho does not register or license dental assistants. What you may do turns on what you have been trained to do, subject to a short list of prohibited duties. This guide comes from DentalReady's fifty-state requirements research: what you can do from day one in Idaho, the certifications that expand your duties, and the realistic path in. Rules change, so the Idaho State Board of Dentistry link at the bottom is always the final word.

Certifications and X-rays in Idaho
No registration and no radiography certification are required by the Idaho State Board of Dentistry. Note one thing Idaho allows that most states do not: dental assistants trained in accordance with the board's rules may administer nitrous oxide and oxygen.
CPR certification required.
The fastest realistic path
Step 1: Build real preparation first: instruments, procedure flow, infection control, and patient communication, so a hiring dentist sees you as useful in week one.
Step 2: Apply to entry-level and willing-to-train postings across Idaho, and ask each practice which certifications they sponsor.
Step 3: Complete the certifications above as your duties grow, starting with radiography, and confirm every requirement with the Idaho State Board of Dentistry.
Common questions
Do dental assistants need a license in Idaho?
No. The current rules of the Idaho State Board of Dentistry, effective July 2024, set requirements for dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists. Dental assistants are not a licensed category, and Idaho Code section 54-920 covers those same three professions.
Can dental assistants take X-rays in Idaho?
Yes, and Idaho requires no radiography certification to do it. No radiography permit, course or examination for dental assistants appears in the board's current rules. Your dentist is responsible for training you, and intraoral procedures are performed under direct supervision.
Where do I verify Idaho's rules?
The Idaho State Board of Dentistry publishes the current duty lists and certification requirements for dental assistants. Check it before enrolling in any course.
